Welcome to Canada’s Northwest Territories
We look forward to discussing and pursuing opportunities for investment and growth with visionaries that are ready to work and partner with us.
Here’s a list of resources that you should note and bookmark for your work:
Client Service and Community Relations (CSCR)
Government Service
Tel: (867) 767-9208
e-mail: [email protected]
Get quickly connected to the right people, at the right place and the right time.
CSCR exists to connect industry, communities and governments in the NWT for mutually beneficial working relationships. This is where you can connect with "resource pathfinders." They can guide you in navigating engagement and regulatory aspects linked to your project.
They can assist organisations, indigenous governments and communities that work in the mineral, oil and gas industries as well as intergovernmental clients. As a main economic driver of the Northwest Territories Economy, supporting sustainable natural resource development is a key interest to the government and residents alike. Investment and support is necessary to create development and exploration projects. These projects can have a highly complicated regulatory process and therefore having support in place is crucial to making sure these beneficial projects can commence.
Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board
Regulatory Authority
Tel: (867) 669-0506
e-mail: [email protected]
Applying for a land use permit and/or water licence is a fairly straightforward process. It starts here.
The NWT regulatory regime comprises a network of resource management boards, governments and other organizations, each with their role to play. They hold events, perform outreach and allow for document upload to facilitate projects. It also maintains a public registry of the licenses and permits they have issued over the years. The key is knowing who to contact and what information you need to present.
Mining Incentive Program
Government Funding Program
Tel: (867) 767-9211 x63469
e-mail: [email protected]
The Mining Incentive Program (MIP) can offset the costs and risks of mineral exploration.
The MIP provides funding to prospectors and exploration companies who propose new exploration projects or are already carrying out NWT mineral exploration work. All levels of exploration, from grassroots to advanced, are eligible.
They maintain the highest level of ethical and professional standards. Remaining impartial and not seeking to advocate for a particular outcome. They strive for scientific excellence by acting as honest brokers of geoscience knowledge and conducting research that is relevant to the Northwest Territories. They take a collaborative approach and value a safe, diverse and innovative work environment.
Mining Recorder’s Office
Government Service
Tel: (867) 767-9210 ext. 63464
e-mail: [email protected]
If you want to stake mineral claims in the NWT, you need a prospecting license.
The Mining Recorder’s Office is the single point of contact for anyone who wants to explore. It administers the NWT’s subsurface mineral tenure and issues prospector's license, prospecting permits, mineral claims, claim tags, claim maps and mineral leases.
They keep track of environmental baseline studies that describe the impact before and after possible exploration and development. This Includes geologic attributes, aquatic resources, soil profiles, wildlife habitats and cultural heritage. One must evaluate the cost of development prior to its application and the MRO takes a holistic view of these costs.
Northwest Territories Geological Survey
Government Service
Tel: (867) 767-9211 x63469
e-mail: [email protected]
The Geological Survey is the main source of geological information in the NWT.
The Survey is a “must have” for successful exploration in the NWT. It supports the discovery of energy and mineral resources by evaluating and characterizing resource potential, generating regional and thematic geoscience knowledge and providing scientific advice to inform your decision making.
They keep track of mapping resources as well as compiling exploration overviews and yearly mining summaries. It is a government funded research organization and offers a digital date of its findings. They provide a geological library with client workspace, field research support, geology trail guides and education presentations for schools and communities.
They work with prospectors and exploration companies, academics and well as the general public. This level of transparency allows for a high level view of the world of geological exploration both for the government as well as individuals.
NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines
Industry Association
Tel: (867) 873-5281
e-mail: [email protected]
You’ll always have a friend in the NWT Chamber of Mines.
All jurisdictions are different, and when it comes to the NWT, the Chamber of mines can help you get up to speed quickly. They are a non profit organisation that works to promote and represent the mining industry. With a need to develop natural resources, along with a concern for the environmental costs, the need for a point of contact arose. They aim to study and discuss matters of the public's interest in mining as well as to research and field inquiries about mining in Canada's North. There is an imperative to cooperate with individuals, corporations, associations and authorities to meet these needs and objectives.
They can advise on who you should talk to and who can help if you run into problems. Their offices can also provide a base for you to work from.
